Good hack -- spatialization using intra-aural delay (instead of loudness) is very effective in headphones.
For fun, you might try varying the delay for dynamic panning. Happily, ChucK makes it easy to play sound files at different rates, so this is straightforward.
I'll post the code for that if I get around to it.
For extra credit, you could add a high-frequency notch for vertical spatialization, ala page 466 of:
