  1. I don't use flashcards to memorize programming languages because I can use references to learn as I go. I use flashcards to learn Japanese because I'm studying it for the sake of learning. Using flashcards to learn to communicate is near futile.
  2. Communication is a great way to engage a mind, though. I learned less in the focused kanji course I took in Japan than I learn incidentally in the general Japanese course here. Here, we learn kanji as we translate "Spirited Away." There, we learned kanji by making long lists of characters and their pronunciations.
  3. If you're looking for flashcard software for OS X, I don't think you can find anything better than Genius.
