Tom Says: Safe code is boring code!
My current phone is a T-Mobile-branded Motorola RAZR V3. It was an expensive gift from Santa and I have yet to break it. Until recently (March 2007) I had yet to customize it beyond using wallpaper and ringtones that came with the phone or were free on T-Mobile's web site. I just purchased a USB Bluetooth adapter for my laptop which has allowed me to copy photos and videos from my phone, and MP3s to use as ringtones to the phone. I haven't tried doing either of these in reverse because I haven't seen a reason to yet, but I doubt I would run into problems.
My first custom ringtone was Wine, Women, and Song by Harvey Danger. The track, as well as the rest of the album (sans the "bonus disc") are available for free download on their web site.
I prepared the track for transfer using the iTunes instructions the Water Only Dries blog: Make a RAZR Ringtone with iTunes. Rather than do everything with iTunes, I used Audacity to trim the audio to 45 seconds, resample and time stretch it back to normal speed, and winLAME to take it down to 64 kbps. I could probably do that in Audacity as well, but it wasn't immediately clear how, and I'm always looking for excuses to run winLAME.
I just dropped the resulting MP3 in the phone's "audio" directory, and it immediately became available in all ringtone selection menus.
